Avoiding is Obsessing

What is it about human beings that typically we only have a binary view of money? We either make it into an idol or label it evil. For most of us it is the reason we do what we do, whether our choices lead us in the pursuit or the avoidance of money.

Most of us have judgment for those who we view as being obsessed with money. Those who value only the dollars and cents of any and everything are most definitely obsessed. But more often I find people obsessed with money in a different way. The energy of avoiding money is also problematic—in fact it is the same energy as being obsessed with money in a different manifestation. Those individuals who spend an enormous amount of energy and time avoiding dealing with money suffer the same challenges as those who make money the center of their lives.

It is funny but there is an appropriate amount of attention that the energy of money requires. It is not necessarily quantifiable; it is more of a qualitative measure. Money should not be confused with an objective or a purpose. On the other hand it is an important variable in being in relationship to others and the world we live in. When we put our relationship with the Divine first, we lay a foundation for our relationship to money.

Non-attachment is at the core of a right relationship with money. When money takes its appropriate place in our lives, it moves in and out of our lives with ease and grace as needed. We understand that we are mere stewards of all of the resources in our lives, and we take care of them as such.

But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Matt 6:33
